HENRY ROLLINS ON ALEC MACKAYE
April 30th, 2012 by Tim

That’s Alec MacKaye, Ian’s brother. I was standing there when that photo was taken. He was such an interesting guy. Alec and I were roommates in the summer of ’80 for a few weeks. Alec had the bunk bed. He would come in at like at 10 a.m. and say he walked to Bethesda and back. He would go in that outfit—the jeans and trench coat. And he would walk through the simmering D.C. stewpot in that outfit, and get to the show early and just pass out. That picture was taken either between sets or when he’d arrived early to the gig and caught a nappy-nap. -Henry Rollins

BAD BRAINS AT CITY GARDENS 1987 | PHOTO: KEN SALERNO

We went to NYC every single weekend, if not more. And we saw so many great bands. For example, Bad Brains, we saw them at least 30 or 40 times. HR was so crazy, but they were so talented, too. I mean, they had incredible leads! We were like, “solos? We can’t do that!” I mean we had some solos in Judge, but not like that. HR though, he would just run up a wall and flip back, or just do flips on his own from a stand still.

Every time they played CB’s, it was like an ocean of heads. There wasn’t even a pit because there was no space. The whole floor would move as people tried to get on stage to dive. Sometimes we would just wait on stage before they started playing, so we could have a head start. We didn’t want to be up front in front of the stage, because we would get crushed and never be able to get back up! So we would wait, and the lights would go down, and then the feedback, and people would start diving. I remember the big monitor on the side of the stage that was hanging, kids would crack their heads open on it when diving. Once they stopped the show because that happened, and the ambulance had to come.

Every time they played, every time they came in, we went.

SEEKERS OF THE TRUTH

CRO MAGS AT THE RITZ | PHOTO: JJ GONSON

Cro-Mags fans, it’s all about being a seeker of the truth. You got to get to the bottom and the truth of everything. That’s why we’re still out doing what we do and I chant everyday. Still to this day, people ask me “Are you still into Krishna?” What do you think? It’s like some fad, “I was into rave music and parachute pants and platforms and now I’m not”? It’s a life-long process, where we all have to purify ourselves. So read Prabhupada’s books every day and chant.

You don’t need these bogus gurus; that’s what I got to say. It’s a cult. They turned it into a cult. You are not allowed to question what they do. They are untouchable. Bullshit. I want to know everything they do.
