1981. Mabuhay Gardens in San Francisco. Black Flag invited 7 Seconds to play with them. The night I met Henry in person. He even “X’ed” Steve Youth and I up before the gig.

KIRA ROESSLER DISCUSSES THE CURRENT STATE OF BLACK FLAG

Earlier today I had a short chat with Kira Roessler (former bassist of Black Flag) about Greg Ginn’s controversial resurrection of Black Flag. Below is how the conversation went down. —Ed DCXX

What do you think of Greg Ginn playing in a band called Black Flag in 2013?
Although in his shoes I would not do the same thing I think that he deserves some appreciation that he never got at the time. I am somewhat convinced though, that the quality of it will be judged harshly.

We recently posted the first new song from Greg’s latest incarnation of Black Flag and it was universally demolished by our readers.
Well Greg has been being demolished all along—when I was in the band we were demolished too.

Well, I think that helped shape the sound and is one of the reasons you guys were so heavy and so unique: hate fuels power.
People hated the direction the band took with My War and Slip It In, etc. and they hate it now. It is so easy to criticize. That is why Flag [Dez Cadena, Keith Morris and Chuck Dukowski's Black Flag cover band] is exactly what people want. Not that that is a bad thing, it just doesn’t invite the same criticism.

As talented as Flag is it doesn’t feel authentic to me (meanwhile I never saw the REAL Black Flag so I’m not really in a position to judge.)
The point is there wasn’t one “real” Black Flag, it was constantly a moving target back then which was Greg’s doing and he is doing so again.

That is what made it so unique and ultimately so interesting/challenging—challenging to these ears even, especially towards the end.
But also constantly hated.

Which to me is what punk is all about. But that’s just how I interpret that silly word “punk.”
Yeah well I think new and different is punk. I think my band Dos [Kira's band with Mike Watt formerly The Minutemen and Firehose] is punk but the punkers will hate, because it isn’t loud enough or fast enough for their limited view.

Exactly. It’s the attitude and the reasons for doing it more than the sound.
[Regarding this discussion about Black Flag in 2013] just keep in mind that it is just a snippet of how I feel about the thing.

As the founder, guitarist and driving influence behind Black Flag, Greg Ginn defined the west coast punk sound and the DIY ethos of punk rock. Through his record label SST, Ginn has tirelessly performed, produced and released new music by himself as well as from an eclectic array of independent artists.

Professional skateboarder and musician, Mike Vallely first saw Black Flag perform at City Gardens in Trenton, New Jersey in 1984. Crediting it as a life changing experience, Mike set forth from that show on an uncharted course of self-expression through his skating. Discovered by Stacy Peralta in 1986, Mike turned pro in 1987 and has had an un-paralleled skateboard career. His first band Mike V And The Rats was formed in 2001.

Greg and Mike first met in Long Beach, CA in May of 2003 when Mike V And The Rats started a supporting run of shows for Greg that would eventually lead to Mike doing a guest vocal spot at the Black Flag Reunion Shows in September 2003. A friendship was formed and the two have kept in touch through the years with the intention of collaborating on new music at some point.

In February of 2012 Greg presented Mike with some music. Mike spent the next 5 months filling notebooks with lyric ideas that would eventually become the debut release from Good For You, Life Is Too Short To Not Hold A Grudge.

Recorded in Taylor, Texas Life Is Too Short… is an angst ridden recording of high energy rock songs blistered with themes of betrayal, regret, disillusionment as well as resolve, determination and independence.

Life Is Too Short To Not Hold A Grudge will be available from SST Records Feb. 26, 2013.
